U.S. natural gas prices are under pressure this week. According to analysts at Freedom, the market is awaiting the signing of a memorandum between the U.S. and Iran. However, rising summer demand could provide support and offset some of the downward pressure.
Data from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) showed that gas inventories increased by 108 billion cubic feet for the week ending June 5 - above market expectations and marking the largest weekly build since the beginning of the year. Current stockpiles now stand at 2.7 trillion cubic feet, 6% above the five-year average, weighing on fuel prices.
Another factor contributing to price declines is the anticipation of de-escalation in the Middle East. Should the U.S. and Iran reach an agreement and sign the memorandum, geopolitical risk premiums embedded in energy prices could ease.
However, Freedom analysts believe that the key market driver in the coming months will be seasonal demand growth. The U.S. DOE forecasts a 7.2% increase in gas consumption in June compared to May, with a further 11% rise expected in July. This surge is primarily driven by heightened air conditioning use during summer heatwaves.
Freedom maintains a positive outlook on the gas market, projecting that U.S. prices could exceed $3.50 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) during the summer season - approximately 12.2% above current levels.
Analysts also note that investors who previously opened positions in the ETF KOLD based on Freedom’s recommendation may consider taking profits following recent market movements.
Experts emphasize that future price dynamics will depend on the balance between seasonal demand and geopolitical factors affecting the global energy market.
Not an individual investment recommendation.
