Alphabet (GOOGL) will be added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average and will replace Verizon Communications (VZ). The changes will take effect prior to the market open and reflect the index provider’s effort to update the composition of one of the most prominent US stock benchmarks in line with the evolving US economy.
Alphabet is the parent company of Google and is among the global leaders in internet search, digital advertising, cloud technologies, and artificial intelligence. Verizon represents the telecommunications sector and is one of the largest telecom operators in the United States.
Freedom Broker analysts note that Alphabet’s inclusion in the Dow Jones underscores the growing importance of technology companies in the economy and financial markets. In their view, the decision also reflects the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technologies, which are becoming one of the key growth drivers for the US corporate sector.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average comprises 30 of the largest and most significant US companies and is traditionally viewed by investors as an indicator of the health of the US economy. Despite the relatively small number of constituents, the index remains one of the most widely cited equity benchmarks worldwide.
Freedom Broker believes that the change in the index’s composition reflects the ongoing transformation of the US economy, in which the technology sector is playing an increasingly prominent role compared to traditional industries, including the telecom business.
