Oil prices continued to decline despite reports of an attack on a cargo vessel near Oman. The price of U.S. WTI crude fell below $70 per barrel, while Brent is trading in the $72–73 per barrel range. According to Freedom analyst Natalia Milchakova, the price drop does not mean that geopolitical risks have fully disappeared.
Typically, an escalation in the Middle East leads to higher oil quotes, but this time the market reacted in the opposite way. Investors fear that shipowners will begin avoiding routes through the Strait of Hormuz and reroute shipments via alternative directions, which over time could lead to an oversupply in the global oil market.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the key routes for global energy trade: a significant share of global exports of oil and liquefied natural gas passes through it. Any incidents in the region are traditionally at the center of market participants’ attention.
Analysts warn that further dynamics in oil quotes will depend both on developments in the Middle East and on decisions by the largest oil producers, including OPEC+ countries.
This is not an individual investment recommendation.
