Cheryl Venable: inflation is too high, but there is a prospect of it easing

Cheryl Venable, acting president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, said that inflation in the U.S. remains too high, and the prospects for it to slow depend largely on how the situation in the Middle East develops. According to her, the Fed’s contacts with companies in the southeastern U.S. point to ongoing price pressures.

Venable believes that geopolitical events have now become a key factor driving inflation dynamics. If the conflict in the Middle East ends and shipping along critical routes resumes, oil supplies could increase, lowering energy costs. However, a continuation of the conflict, by contrast, could lead to further rises in oil prices and an усиление inflationary pressure.

Thus, conditions in energy markets are becoming one of the most important factors for U.S. monetary policy. Cheaper oil and fuel could make it easier for the Federal Reserve to bring inflation back to its 2% target. If supply disruptions persist, disinflation may prove slower and more difficult.

As long as inflation remains above the desired level, the scope for rapid policy easing is limited. At the same time, a potential decline in energy prices if the situation in the Middle East stabilizes could create conditions for easing inflationary pressure.
