U.S. PPI index unchanged in July

The U.S. Department of Labor published wholesale price data for July. According to today’s report, the PPI index, which reflects changes in producer prices, was unchanged versus the expert forecast of +0.2%. Core prices, excluding volatile items, rose by 0.2%. Over the past 12 months, the PPI index increased by 4.7%, while its core component rose by 4.2%.

The producer price index is a key indicator because it often precedes changes in consumer prices. A higher PPI reading is usually viewed as a bullish signal for the U.S. dollar, as it points to rising inflationary pressure that could lead to tighter monetary policy.
