Freedom Broker analysts maintain a “Buy” rating on shares of U.S. natural gas producers EQT Corporation (EQT) and Range Resources (RRC), with target prices of $81.00 and $54.00, respectively. In the experts’ view, their combination will reduce costs and strengthen their position in the market for long-term gas supply. The proposed all-stock consideration from EQT is valued at $54.91 per Range Resources share — 20.6% above its price cited in the report.

What EQT and Range Resources do
Both companies produce natural gas in the Appalachian Basin in the United States. Their core acreage in southwestern Pennsylvania overlaps, and EQT also has an extensive pipeline infrastructure. Range Resources additionally produces natural gas liquids (NGLs), whose sales help reduce dependence on natural gas prices.
After the merger, production will exceed 9 billion cubic feet of gas equivalent per day, and the inventory of drilling locations will last for more than 30 years. Gas equivalent allows different types of produced hydrocarbons to be converted to a common unit of measurement.
The deal’s main value is the adjacency of assets
According to Freedom’s estimates, the primary effect of the combination is tied to the ability to plan drilling jointly and use existing infrastructure. Bringing Range Resources’ acreage into EQT’s production and transportation system should extend its cost advantage to a larger resource base.
Management expects to achieve annual synergy benefits of $325 million within two years and more than $600 million over the long term. Analysts consider these targets achievable: in previous transactions, EQT exceeded its own synergy goals.
An additional argument is growing demand from local customers, including data centers. In the experts’ view, the combination of large production volumes, proprietary infrastructure, a sizable drilling inventory, and an investment-grade credit rating will help the combined company secure long-term contracts.
What Range Resources shareholders will receive
EQT has agreed to acquire Range Resources with all-stock consideration. For each Range Resources share, its holders will receive 0.987 EQT shares. At an EQT price of $55.63 cited in the October 26 report, the value of the proposed consideration is $54.91 per Range Resources share. This is 20.6% above the RRC price stated in the document — $45.52. This premium relates to the deal terms, not to the upside potential to the analysts’ target price.
To fund the consideration, EQT will issue about 230.6 million new shares. The total share count will increase by roughly 37%, from 625.5 million to about 856.2 million. Range Resources shareholders will own about 27% of the combined company. The boards of directors of both companies unanimously approved the agreement. Closing is expected in Q1 2027; however, approvals from shareholders and antitrust regulators are still required.
Why analysts maintain the $81 and $54 targets
Freedom maintains its EQT target price at $81.00 pending a revision of forecasts. The valuation is based on a five-year discounted cash flow model — a calculation of the present value of the business’s future cash inflows. For now, the model includes only EQT, without Range Resources.
For Range Resources, the experts also keep a “Buy” rating and the $54.00 target, calculated without factoring in the deal. In their view, the proximity of this estimate to the proposed $54.91 consideration indicates that the acquisition terms generally correspond to the company’s fundamental value.
At the same time, the exchange ratio is fixed, so the value of the consideration will move with EQT’s share price. Analysts expect Range Resources shares to largely track the acquirer’s stock as well.
Low costs and cash flow support the investment view
After the deal, EQT’s free-cash-flow breakeven price excluding debt is expected to fall below $2 per MMBtu — a unit of energy. This should allow the company to maintain positive cash flow even amid weak gas prices.
Range Resources’ relatively low leverage and the all-stock consideration, according to the report, will help reduce EQT’s leverage. Management believes this opens a path to a BBB/Baa2 credit rating.
Over the next five years, the combined company is expected to generate about $20 billion in cumulative free cash flow — funds remaining after operating expenses and capital expenditures. Under favorable market conditions, this would create opportunities to raise the base dividend and repurchase shares.
However, the additional share issuance will increase the share count. If the benefits of the combination prove weaker than expected, EQT’s earnings and free cash flow per share could decline. Among other risks, analysts cite a delay or failure of the transaction, integration challenges, and the dependence of the consideration value on EQT’s share price.
What kind of balance sheet Range Resources brings into the merger
In Q1 2026, Range Resources’ revenue rose 49.8% year over year to $1.03 billion. The average realized hydrocarbon price increased 27.3% to $5.09 per thousand cubic feet equivalent. Production totaled 198.7 billion cubic feet equivalent, remaining stable year over year.
Operating cash flow before working-capital changes reached $539.6 million, with capital expenditures of $167.7 million. Net debt declined by $384 million over the quarter to $833.8 million. The company also expanded its share repurchase program to $1.5 billion and raised the quarterly dividend to $0.10 per share.
The next milestone for investors is the Q3 results: both companies plan to publish them after the close on October 27. Conference calls previously scheduled for October 28 were canceled due to the deal announcement.
