Investment Review №353. In Search of New Landmarks

Small-Cap Segment Overview

Small-caps

Innovative Aerosystems (IA) develops avionics and control systems for commercial, business, and military aircraft. The investment case is underpinned by growing aftermarket, higher service revenue, and continued demand for equipment upgrades. Key growth catalysts include new business- and commercial-aviation programs and an expanding order backlog. Additional upside could come from the acquisition of a ruggedized-display manufacturer and a contract to supply systems for electric aircraft. Execution, however, remains contingent on timely certification and the production launch timeline.

Key risks include customer concentration, delivery delays, and the commercialization of new programs. The 12‑month price target is $31.

Canadian Solar (CSIQ) manufactures solar modules and energy storage systems and develops renewable energy projects. The investment case centers on robust demand for energy storage and for products from its U.S. plants. The primary growth driver is the energy storage segment, supported by strong shipments and a sizable portfolio of long-term contracts. Additional upside comes from U.S.-manufactured module sales and monetization of mature project assets. However, Q2 revenue growth did not translate into better profitability due to elevated freight costs, production ramp-up expenses, and margin normalization. Key risks include negative cash flow, increasing leverage, high capex requirements, and margin volatility.

The 12-month price target is $14.50

Zoomd Technologies (ZOMD-CA) provides solutions that automate and optimize digital advertising. The investment case rests on a potential rebound in spending by key accounts, continued customer acquisition, and efficiency gains from cost reductions and AI-driven tools. The primary growth driver is rising client ad budgets across new markets and channels. New customers already contribute meaningfully to revenue but have not yet fully offset reduced activity from major clients. In Q2, revenue missed expectations, but gross margin expansion helped return EBITDA to positive territory. Key risks include dependence on major clients and uncertainty over the timing of demand recovery.

The 12-month price target is $1.00

Aviat Networks (AVNW) provides networking equipment and solutions to telecom operators and enterprises. The investment case is supported by a North American demand recovery, a growing order backlog, and higher shipments to broadband networks. Key growth drivers include private-network deployments and initiatives to connect multi-family residential buildings. Management’s FY2027 revenue and EBITDA guidance exceeded expectations. Near term, margins—especially in the first fiscal quarter—face pressure from component shortages and higher input costs. Principal risks include supply-chain disruptions, revenue seasonality, and customer concentration.

The 12-month price target is $27
