Shares of French biotechnology company BioMérieux (BIOX) fell after the release of its first-half financial results and a revision of its mid-term outlook for 2027–2028. According to Freedom analyst Vladimir Chernov, investors interpreted the deterioration in the mid-term forecast for 2027–2028 financial metrics as a signal of a structural slowdown in business growth, which could lead to the company’s shares continuing to lag the market.

About BioMérieux

BioMérieux is a French biotechnology company specializing in the development and production of clinical diagnostics solutions. The company’s products are used to detect infectious diseases, monitor food safety, and diagnose various conditions. BioMérieux operates in more than 160 countries and is one of the global leaders in the laboratory diagnostics market.

What BioMérieux’s lowered outlook means for investors

According to Freedom Broker analyst Vladimir Chernov, BioMérieux’s cut to its 2027–2028 mid-term outlook is a more important factor for investors than strong quarterly sales, as it indicates a structural slowdown in growth across key business areas, primarily in the molecular diagnostics segment.

The analyst notes that the market began pricing in weaker prospects in advance: since April, the company’s shares have already lost about 20%, so their additional decline after the outlook update was relatively moderate. This may indicate that a significant portion of negative expectations is already reflected in the market valuation.

The company expects its operating profit (EBIT) in the mid-term to come in 4–9% below forecasts. According to Vladimir Chernov, BioMérieux shares may continue to lag the market until the company provides convincing evidence of a recovery in organic growth, primarily in the Spotfire segments—a platform for molecular diagnostics—as well as in respiratory diagnostics.

What’s happening in the biotechnology sector

Earlier, Freedom analysts noted strong upside potential in Viridian Therapeutics, ahead of an FDA decision on veligrotug for the treatment of thyroid eye disease. The firm believes that a successful approval could become Viridian’s first commercial success and also intensify competition in this therapy market due to a more convenient dosing regimen and compelling clinical trial results.

The market is also keeping a close eye on Upstream Bio, which is developing Verekitug for the treatment of severe asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. Freedom analysts previously noted that the company’s upcoming consultations with the FDA could be a key event in determining the дальнейшего пути development path for the drug. In experts’ view, successful advancement of the clinical program and confirmation of the drug’s potential could be the main drivers of the company’s valuation growth.

Freedom recommended buying shares of Abbott Laboratories, expecting revenue growth to reaccelerate thanks to the development of its medical devices segment, an expanded product lineup, and stronger positioning in oncology diagnostics following the acquisition of Exact Sciences. Analysts believe Abbott’s current price does not fully reflect the company’s long-term growth potential.

At the same time, the biotechnology sector is attracting attention from artificial intelligence developers as well. Earlier, Anthropic announced the launch of the Claude Science platform designed for scientific research and drug development. Freedom Global noted that the company’s move into healthcare confirms growing interest among technology companies in medical innovation and opens up new opportunities to apply artificial intelligence to drug discovery.
