A new wave of bomb threat messages involving aircraft could have a short-term impact on shares of European air carriers, according to Freedom Broker analyst Vladimir Chernov. Route changes, unscheduled landings, and inspections raise costs and disrupt schedules. However, the expert does not expect a significant and prolonged decline in quotations solely because of these incidents, unless the situation leads to mass flight cancellations.

Threats affected at least 17 flights
European airlines faced a second wave of bomb threat messages in a week. Inspections were required for at least 17 aircraft in several European countries.
Affected carriers include Ryanair (NASDAQ: RYAAY), easyJet (LSE: EZJ), Wizz Air (LSE: WIZZ) and Finnair (Nasdaq Helsinki: FIA1S). Some flights were diverted to other airfields, and some aircraft were escorted by fighter jets. The threat messages turned out to be false.
Previously, on November 2 and 3, similar incidents affected eight flights. European air traffic coordinator Eurocontrol said it is monitoring the situation and working with carriers, airports, and air navigation service providers.
Main consequences are additional costs and schedule disruptions
According to Chernov, unscheduled landings and route changes increase airlines’ costs. Additional inspections also delay the return of aircraft to scheduled operations.
Depending on the circumstances, carriers may face costs for passenger care and possible compensation payments. Therefore, even false threats can worsen the financial result of individual flights.
For now, the scale of the impact on the business appears limited, the analyst believes. A more serious risk will arise if such messages become regular and lead to mass cancellations.
Continuation of incidents may affect demand
Chernov allows that recurring threats could reduce passengers’ willingness to plan trips. In that case, in addition to extra costs, the risk of weakening demand would emerge, increasing pressure on quotations.
However, a short-term stock reaction and a sustained deterioration of the business are different scenarios. For now, the analyst sees no grounds to expect a prolonged decline in share prices exclusively because of bomb threat messages.
Carriers’ resilience also depends on other costs
For European airlines, fuel costs and the ability to control expenses remain important. Earlier, Freedom Broker noted that locking in fuel prices supports Ryanair amid expensive oil. According to Chernov, such protection gives the company an advantage over less hedged competitors.
New incidents add operational uncertainty, but their long-term impact will depend on the duration of disruptions and passengers’ reaction.
This is not an individual investment recommendation.
